It should be noted that I am safety girl :: I ride with blinky lights, even in the daytime. I stop at every stop sign, I signal at every corner. I am courtesy girl on a bike because my parents are midwestern and because I believe in manners, but also because there is almost nothing I abhor more than inconsiderate cyclists who make the road more dangerous for the rest of us. I mention this only because there is absolutely no reason for a driver to behave aggressively toward me.
Still it happens. Drives swerve and buzz and cuss at me fairly frequently. And what do I do? I want to say that I raise my hand and I speak my mind and I express my frustration eloquently. I don't. I don't even raise my hand to flip people off. I'm often a girl, riding alone, on some half-deserted road, and I'm a big fan of my own safety. Also, I'm probably a weenie.
What I have taken to doing is ringing my bell at them. AGGRESSIVELY. After they leave. These dickhead drivers. HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW?! Ding, ding, ding.
This only works if you install your new bell correctly.
Sigh.
